Q: How Did You First Start
Using Cloth Diapers & End Up Making Them Your Business?
A:
I have to say, cloth seemed scary at first. My friend Lisa used
them on her son, and I always wondered why someone would want to
dunk & swish! I was so uninformed!!! When my disposable-diapered
son was 16 months old, and I was 5 months pregnant with my
second son, I came across a statistic estimating that the
average child produces about 10,000 dirty diapers before potty
training... that kind of freaked me out. I looked on a few cloth
diaper websites and was amazed at how easy, economical & cute
they were. I was hooked!
My husband likes to tease me:
"You love those diapers!" But it's true. As soon as I started
using them on my oldest, I was raving about how awesome cloth
diapers are to everyone... my mom, my sister... anyone in the
grocery store... I decided to take the plunge and make cloth
diapers my career. I'm able to stay home with my kiddos, and
still have a job I'm passionate about.
Q:
Was starting your business
difficult?
A: It was WAY easier than I thought
it would be. My city's web site was incredibly informative about
the various permits & licenses needed to legally open a business
in California. The most excruciating part was waiting for said
permits... I'm not exactly known for my patience!
Q: How do
you manage to run a business with small children?
A: I live for nap time! Also,
when my mom comes to visit every Thursday, I use "Grandma Time"
to bust out some hard-core work.
Q: What does your home office/work space
look like?
A:
I tend to keep my lap-top on the kitchen counter, rather than on my
desk. This way I can sneak a peek at my email without having to
leave the adjacent "play area".
Q: What Is The Most
Rewarding Thing About Running Your Home Business?
A: I feel like I can make a
difference in my community, and the diapering world in
general, without sacrificing time with my children. Being a
mom is the most wonderful thing in my life, but it's also
nice to have another aspect to my identity.
Q:
What new an exciting things can we
expect in the future?
A: My biggest goal is to
educate people about cloth diapers of today. If I had seen a
pocket diaper before my oldest son was born, he would have
been cloth-diapered from the start! I'm hoping to get the
word about cloth diapers out locally, as well as on my site.
I'll be adding many more products as my business grows!
