Diaper Laundering Glossary

******

These are some of the most popular laundering products used for cloth diapers...

Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator - Made by Bi-O-Kleen, Bac-Out is ideal for cutting odors and for pre-treating stains on your diapers.

Baking Soda  - Baking soda is a readily available and inexpensive household product. It is also called Sodium Bicarbonate, or Bicarbonate of Soda. It is a cheap yet very effective tool in your home for combating odors, cleaning and sanitizing. There are many reasons to use baking soda in your home, but the number one reason is because this is a natural substance that will not harm you, your family or the environment because is it not a chemical compound that effects nature. Baking soda is actually a compound that is found through out nature, in the ocean, in the soil, in our foods, and in our bodies.

Bleach - Bleach is produced by reacting chlorine into a dilute sodium hydroxide solution. It is used for whitening paper, soap, straw and cotton, and for disinfection, water purification and in sanitary cleaners. It is very harsh and should not be used on cloth diapers.

Calgon Water Softener - This is found in the laundry. This is only helpful to those of you with really hard water. Add a capful of this to the hot part of the wash and it will help keep your diapers soft and absorbent, and also help prevent repelling fleece.

Detergent - A water-soluble cleansing agent, other than soap. All detergents work in basically the same way. They contain molecules that enable them to be soluble in water and attract oil and dirt to them. For cloth diapers choose a detergent without phosphates, fabric softeners, or too strong a fragrance.

Distilled White Vinegar  - White Vinegar is great for cleaning, especially laundry. You can eliminate soap residue by adding about 1 cup of white vinegar to the washer's final rinse. Vinegar is so mild that it won't harm fabrics but it is strong enough to dissolve the alkalis in soaps and detergents. Vinegar is also good for breaking down uric acid in infants clothing,  so adding 1 cup vinegar to the rinse water will help get your baby clothes smelling fresh again. Even better...it's cheap!

Dryer Balls for Cloth DiapersDryer Balls - Dryer Balls are the safe, natural, easy way to soften fabrics while saving money on fabric softeners, dryer sheets and energy. Your clothes dry faster too. Dryer Max Dryer Balls can be used over and over again and they last for years!

Eucalan Lavendar Wool Wash  - Eucalan, is a safe, gentle cleaner that contains lanolin and is great for wool! Every time you wash with it, you will be restoring the wools natural lanolin.

Grapefruit Seed Extract  - Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is a powerful disinfectant. A few drops add to your wash will help disinfect your cloth diapers and keep them bacteria free!

Oxygen Bleach – Using a hydrogen peroxide process to whiten and disinfect, oxygen bleach is very effective and works as a great substitute for chlorine bleach.

Tea Tree Oil - See our Essential Oils & Cloth Diapers section for explanations on the benefits of using tea tree oil in conjunction with cloth diapers.
